Nigerian missing scholar Dipo Fasina found in Turkey

The earlier reported missing former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dipo Fasina, popularly known as ‘Jingo’, has been found in Turkey, and would be on his way to Nigeria on Monday.

Penpushing reports that the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed the development, while the commission in a tweet commended Nigeria’s High Commission in Turkey for its collaborative efforts to locate the scholar.

The 76-year old scholar was said to be on official engagement to Algeria, missed his connecting flight from Istanbul, Turkey, and was reported missing earlier on Sunday, as his wherabout was unknown since.

“The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, in collaboration with the Nigerian High Commission in Turkey, has successfully located Prof Fasina, who went missing for a few days at Istanbul Airport while connecting on a flight back home’, Dabiri-Erewa said.

“A big thanks to the Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey who immediately sent officials to the Airport to physically locate him in the very busy and huge Istanbul Airport”, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) emphaised

Penpushing further reports that  Fasina an activist, and unionist, taught Philosophy for 34 years at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, which he joined in 1979 after returning from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he bagged his PhD.

The renowned scholar was born to the Ashogbon royal family of Lagos, who is nicknamed Jingo by his students is a trustee of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and chairperson of the Joint Action Front (JAF), a coalition of labour movements and civil society organisations championing pro-people policies in Nigeria.

Penpushing also reports that he is credited with having founded the philosophy department at the Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), and since his retirement from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife has taught Philosophy across some Nigerian universities.
