Police: One shot in Ibadan over alleged N50 bribe

A bloody clash between police and a commercial motorcyclist in gate area of Ibadan, Oyo State Capital on Tuesday has led to the shooting of one person alleged to have died and several others injured

Penpushing reports that, the incident was said to have occurred at about 11am when a policeman allegedly demanded N50 bribe from a motorcyclist, popularly called Okada rider, which was bluntly denied by the motorcyclist

The eyewitness Seun Ogunjobi said the Okada rider in the course of attempt by the policeman to teargass him for his refusal to give the bribe, the motorcyclist made efforts to hold the policeman hand, hence the policeman was alleged to have shot him, and was thereafter rushed  to University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan by some of his colleagues.

Penpushing further reports that, the account further said, in retaliation other commercial motorcyclists embarked on a violent protest, a development which led to shooting to air to dispersed the crowd, but in the process, many were said to have sustained injuries

“After the bike man was shot and people around the place wanted to retaliate, the police officers, in an attempt to whisk away with armour tank the police officer that shot the bike man, collided with an ongoing tricycle, injuring four passengers inside the Keke NAPEP”, Ogunjobi.

Penpushing also reports that, the Gate Police station was allegedly burnt, while business activities paralyzed within the area as shops and business owners hurriedly locked their shops to avoid been attacked.

The Oyo State Police Command Public Relations Officer Gbenga Fadeyi said none of its officers fired any shot contrary to social media report ,but admitted there was a clash between officers of the correctional service and commercial motorcyclists, while police and other security agencies had to come in in addressing the situation

“The truth is that there was a clash between officers of the correctional service and bike men stationed at Agodi gate, upon receipt of this information, police men as well as other security agencies moved to the scene to ensure there’s no breakdown of law and order that could lead to coordinated attack on the prison facility’.

Penpushing reports that, the police spokesman however said that further development will unfold and be communicated later to journalists
