WOMEN CONVERGE TO TACKLE MENACE OF CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA
In similar vein, the training touches on understanding corruption and its implication on human development, stemming the tides of corruption in the society, as well as key strategies in combating corruption, with a group work to identify at least five noticeable corrupt practices, and who the perpetrators are among others
Penpushing further reports that, the training also addressed need for mobilizing for transformative change, as well as workplan development for gender accountability programmes at State levels across the country
The Executive Director, Women Advocates Research and Documentation C entre (WARDC), Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi in her welcome address noted that, corruption is a global phenomenon and has become one of the major challenges to economic and political growth of the countries where it thrives.
‘For instance in Nigeria corruption exacerbates and causes conflicts, promote poverty and impacts negatively on the best use of human and natural resources. The role of this project is to enable women to hold government accountable and challenge corrupt practices especially at the grassroot level with the objective to understand and develop strategies that can be used to challenge corruption in various communities’
She further added that, through the training, the organizers intends to join efforts with the anti corruption crusade to create awareness on behavorial change of attitudes, social norms, good governance and service delivery issues as a human rights concern for public discuss.
‘This project initiative aim to facilitate better understanding on issues affecting women at the grassroots level and how they can tackle forms of corruption within different communities in other to advance development’, Akiyode-Afolabi emphasized
