The Journalist Who Shaped a Generation – Prof. Dayo Duyile’s Six-Decade Legacy of Mentorship and Media Mastery

Prof. Dayo Michael Duyile (born October 10, 1942, Ondo State) is a living testament to dedication, resilience, and intellectual rigor in Nigerian journalism. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he transformed from a teenage trainee reporter into a revered press historian, author, and institutional leader. His journey marked by hands-on reporting, editorial mastery, and academic innovation reflects the evolution of Nigeria’s media landscape itself.

At just 17, fresh from St. Luke’s Secondary Modern School, Duyile joined the Southern Nigerian Defender in Ibadan as a trainee reporter. Tasked with crime reporting from police bulletins, he earned a modest £5 monthly, choosing journalism over higher-paying positions because of a lifelong passion inspired by his father’s newspapers, including West African Pilot, Daily Times, and Nigerian Tribune.

He soon moved to the Nigerian Tribune, where his meticulous coverage of murders, burglaries, and manslaughter cases earned him glowing recognition from Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande in 1963, “Dayo Duyile came from the Nigerian Tribune. Anytime a senior reporter was not at hand, Dayo Duyile was always our answer. Dayo Duyile will go very far in his chosen profession.”

By 1963, Duyile had joined the Daily Times in Lagos, covering landmark court cases including the treasonable felony trial of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Anthony Enahoro. He undertook daring investigative assignments, including a four-month undercover exposé on Indian hemp trafficking, which earned him a commendation from the police and highlighted his courage as a journalist.

Duyile seamlessly transitioned into broadcast journalism with Western Nigeria Television/WNBS (Ibadan), gaining firsthand experience in the visual medium he described as “entirely different” from print. Concurrently, he served as Deputy Editor of DRUM Magazine (Lagos edition) under Olu Adetule, demonstrating his versatility across media platforms.

After completing his first degree, Duyile became Editor of Daily Sketch (Ibadan) and later Acting General Manager, overseeing editorial direction and organizational growth. From 1980 to 1982, he led in-house training at Concord Press, shaping the skills of Nigeria’s next generation of journalists while coordinating seminars that became industry benchmarks.

Entrepreneurial and visionary, he founded Gong Communications Limited in 1983 and authored his first book, Media and Mass Communication in Nigeria (1979), blending practical experience with academic insight.

Prof. Duyile’s legacy reached its zenith at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), where he served as Assistant Director, Acting Director, and then full Director from 1989 to 1995. During this period, I had the privilege of studying under him for my ND program between 1991 and 1993, witnessing firsthand his commitment to mentorship, curriculum development, and professional excellence.

He modernized curricula, built the library, introduced evening classes for working journalists, and forged international academic collaborations, including with the Ghana Institute of Journalism. His dedication to professional standards and ethical practice set a benchmark for journalism education in Nigeria.

Widely regarded as the historian of the Nigerian press, Prof. Duyile authored six seminal books that remain standard references for students and professionals alike:

• Media and Mass Communication in Nigeria (1979; 2nd edition 1989) – a foundational text on Nigerian media operations.
• Makers of Nigerian Press (first edition 1986/87; fifth edition 2019) – a definitive, 726-page chronicle of newspaper pioneers, modern press barons, and contemporary publishers.
• Manual for African Journalists: News Reporting and Editing (1990) – a practical handbook for African newsroom professionals.
• Ethics of Journalism in Africa – exploring moral dilemmas and standards within the African media landscape.
• Political and Parliamentary Reporting – a guide shaped by decades of political and court reporting experience.
• Public Relations for West Africa – an early practical manual for PR practice in the region.

Through these works, Prof. Duyile has demonstrated his guiding philosophy, “A journalist is a historian, entrusted with documenting the evolution, ethics, and essence of the profession.”

Even after transitioning fully into academia, lecturing at institutions including Adekunle Ajasin University, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Elizade University, and currently Wesley University, Ondo, Prof. Duyile continues to embody the journalist’s spirit.

As Professor and former Acting Dean, he combines mentorship with scholarship, shaping the next generation of media professionals while preserving the historical record of Nigerian journalism.

From a teenage crime beat reporter in 1960 to a distinguished director, scholar, and historian, Prof. Dayo Michael Duyile’s life is a masterclass in courage, intellectual curiosity, and lifelong dedication, a beacon for aspiring journalists and a pillar of Nigeria’s media history.
