Shoot your attackers, Governor tells police

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi has encouraged security agencies in the state to defend themselves against armed bandits who attack them and destroy their facilities, stressing that they don’t need anyone’s permission to defend yourselves.

Penpushing reports that, Umahi said this while receiving the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of South-east zone, Joseph Egbunike, in his office in Abakaliki, and also reiterated his support for the ‘Operation Restore Peace’, a police initiative in the zone.

“It is wrong for you to be holding a gun and someone will attack, kill and snatch your gun.You do not need anyone’s permission to defend yourselves. I state clearly that if a youth has the courage to attack a security agent with a gun, such a security agent should shoot to defend himself if he can. I have made this point severally and will never regret doing so,” he said.

Penpushing further reports that, the Governor, who complained about shortage of police personnel in the state and urged the Deputy Inspector General of Police to post more to the state for adequate security.

The Governor pointed out that the security officials killed were humans too “and also peoples’ fathers and mothers” just as he assured the Deputy Inspector General that the state will do everything possible to accommodate them.

Penpushing also reports that, the police boss in his remarks, expressed appreciation to the Governor for his reception, noting that he was in the state to oversee the activities of police’s Operation Restore Peace.

“Dialogue and diplomacy solve all issues of marginalisation, injustice, inequality, among others and this is exemplified with the prevailing peace in Europe. The challenging days in the country would soon be over” he said.
