Murder convict accuses judiciary, government of turning deaf ears to many assassinations in Nigeria

A convict sentenced to death for the murder of a female Akwa Ibom State job seeker has accused the judiciary and Nigerian government of turning deaf ears to many assassinations in the country, just as he declared that he was not guilty of the offence he was convicted for.

Penpushing reports that, Uduak Akpan, made the accusation at the Akwa Ibom State High Court, when he was asked by the judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang, if he would like to say something, having being sentenced to death by hanging.

The convict who after the judgement attempted to escape from the courtroom, but was overpowered by security operatives, insisted that that he was not guilty, but the judge told him the court had passed that stage

“My Lord, I am not guilty. My Lord, in our country, there’re many assassinations, but nobody is doing something about it’, the convict emphasized, but didn’t give details on why he said many assassinations in the country were not attended to.

Penpushing further reports that, Akpan was arrested and arraigned for allegedly raping and killing Iniubong Umoren last year, whom he lured out of her home with a fake job interview, and thereafter buried the corpse in a shallow grave.

The judge  also found him  guilty of rape and sentenced him to life imprisonment, adding that  the prosecution had proved beyond doubt the case of rape and murder against him, but  however, discharged and acquitted his  father and sister who were the 2nd and the 3rd defendants, respectively, in the case.
