OGUN GOVERNOR-ELECT: NON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATION DEMANDS ESTABLISHMENT OF BOARD FOR DISABILITY MATTERS

The body emphasized that when Abiodun formally takes over, his administration should considered  the board as road maps, to policy direction that the new government should consider vital in the best interest of the State.

‘In the position paper, the NGO contented that it’s high time that Ogun State established a Board for the Elderly and Disability Matters to articulate and coordinate policies, programmes and projects that would benefit the two categories of people’, the statement read.

Penpushing further reports that, the body while justifying the prescribed approach, insisted that if the government could provide boards to coordinate and assist Christian and Moslem pilgrimages, it sees nothing wrong in the administration taking such a progressive step of having a law as well as an agency to provide institutional support in the planning of welfare of the elderly and the People with Disability (PWDs).

It would be recalled that shortly before the general elections; President Muhamamadu Buhari signed into law the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Bill passed by the National Assembly in 2018. By the law, a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities is also expected to be established to see to effective implementation of the law.

The group submitted therefore that it’s consistent with national and international practice to have an agency dedicated to championing policy and planning welfare of the old people and citizens suffering one impairment or the other.

Penpushing also reports that, the body while reassuring the incoming Governor of its readiness to work with him and his administration in improving the care and welfare of the elderly and people living with disabilities in the State, it, however, reiterated that the organisation will remain committed to its ideals at all times.
