Strike: Stop inflammatory comments against us, Doctors warn Chief Medical Director

The Association of Residents Doctors (ARD), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan have cautioned the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, on his alleged comments that the striking Doctors in the hospital are playing politics.

Penpushing reports that, President of the association, Dr. Zakariyah Hussain while speaking with journalists stated that members are not interested in playing politics as being alleged by the Chief Medical Director but were only demanding their right.

“Our action was not borne out of desire to play politics but germane intention to get what is right done by payment of our members salaries and  enrollment on Integrated Personal Payroll System (IPPS).”

Penpushing further reports that Hussain stated that considering the current economic situation in the country, 215 residents Doctors in the hospital are yet to be paid their five months salaries, adding that these are men with responsibilities who have worked hard in the hospital in their various departments.

“Some of them contracted Covid-19 during the course of their duties and they have to get medication themselves to treat it, they also have dependents relying on them for survival. We are also demanding that the 215 Doctors affected should be enrolled on the IPPS platform so that this issue will not re-occurred again.”

Penpushing also reports that the the President however said that the association is reaching out to stakeholders in health sectors to appeal to the federal government and management of the hospital to get the matter resolved.

The Chief Medical Director, it is recalled was alleged to have on Friday said that the striking Doctors have  refused to call off their indefinite strike despite management’s plea and intervention of stakeholders, adding that their demands were not peculiar to the foremost Teaching Hospital, but  a national issue.

Meanwhile, the Doctors have  initially embarked on five days warning strike between 15th to 20th of March, and thereafter  joined the national body to embark on nationwide strike that lasted between 1st of April and 12th of April.
