DON’T ALLOW SOCIAL LIFE DERAIL ACADEMIC PURSUIT, STUDENTS LEADER CAUTIONED COLLEAGUES

‘As students of tertiary institutions, the quality of our life is influenced by environment factors which may range from peer group influence to that of social life. The friends we make sharpen our interaction with the social environment as well as its effect on our quality of life’.

“Social life is one of those aspects of life that brings happiness, which, according to Aristotle, is the primary pursuit of mankind; our definition of social life determines the type of influence”, he pointed out

“As a student, if you can’t stay away from social media networks for a few minutes, then you have become a victim to the evil power and effect of social networking. Though we cannot rule out the positive impact of social media, the negative effects outweigh the positive impact.”

“There is something called FOMO. It is an acronym for Fear of Missing Out. It is a phenomenon that negatively impacts social media user. It is an anxiety that you get when you are scared of missing out on certain positive emotions or experience that someone else is getting’.

‘You become preoccupied with thoughts that distract you from your primary focus on campus, which is academics. The more you use social media, the more you get to see people having more fun or material things than you are enjoying right now, this result to addiction.”

“As a student, I have witnessed many occasions whereby students would go for night reading, and at the end of the day, they succeeded in playing with their phones for 3 hours 50 minutes out of the 4 hours they dedicated to studying.”

“Students of this dispensation tend to have a dissenting view about social life. Rather than utilizing it in terms of a life of mutually shared experience in face-to-face-situations, they see it as a platform to uncontrollably get engaged in social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, etc. which may even extend to getting addicted to video games and pornographic sites at the expense of their academic pursuit.

The FOSSU leader however urged Nigerian students to reduce the time they spend on social media networks and develop full concentration on their academics, adding that no job or award awaits for them as the individual with the greatest online presence.

“Let us endeavour to strive academically to have good results before making complaints about jobs. It should come to our consciousness that the development of any nation is the effect of the level of education its citizens have received.”
