Violence Against Person Prohibition law gazetted in Oyo State

The Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) law domesticated in 2020 was on Wednesday formally presented to the public in Oyo State for easy access to all stakeholders and to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.
Penpushing reports that the wife of the Oyo State Governor, Engr( Mrs) Tamunominini Makinde while speaking during the public presentation and media engagement on the Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) law noted that the law was basically put in place to protect the right of women and children in the state.
‘The Oyo State through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion had been ensuring that survivors of gender Based Violence were supported through all stages but the availability of the VAPP law in the state will further enhance justice in all ramifications’.
Penpushing further reports that, the first Lady insisted that no perpetrator would go unpunished now that the law is in place and the process of implementation has commenced, noting that Oyo State, been a pace setter state was among one the first few states to begin implementation of the law, adding that the Oyo state model has been adopted by other states.
The Governor’s wife while urging people to always speak out and not afraid against any form of violence explained that the law was made to address all forms of violence, while it is recalled that the law was sponsored by Hon Olawunmi Oladeji, the chairman House Committee on Women Affairs at the Oyo State House of Assembly.
Penpushing also reports that the lawmaker noted that the success of the bill which has become a law became possible because the 9th Assembly Speaker, Hon Debo Ogundoyin provided adequate support for the committee.
The sponsor noted that the law was supported by Westminister Foundation Democracy (WFD) and funded by foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, stressing that the result of all stakeholders efforts including government agencies, parastatals, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGOs) is the public presentation of the law.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Professor Oyelowo Oyewo lamented that Gender Based Violence (GBV) has continued undermining right of women and girls across the country which Oyo State is not exceptional.
Penpushing reports that , the Commissioner said that minimum penalty for violators Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) has been included in the law, commending efforts of the Governor and all stakeholders for making the law to come into lime light.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Alhaja Kafilat Olayiwola represented by Mrs Oluyemisi Fola-Olakayode described the new law as a mile stone achievement towards ensuring that the right of women and girls are protected in the state, adding that the Ministry will create awareness and sensitised the people to know that their right for survival, protection and participation is guaranteed.
The Coordinator, Sexual and Gender based Response Team (SGBVRT), Barrister Mrs Dupe Awosemusi said that enactment of the new law shows another outstanding achievements of the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.
Penpushing also reports that, the Sexual and Gender based Response Team (SGBVRT), Coordinator however said that the law would help to curb Gender Based Violence for the purpose of well being of people in the state.
