Sanusi sues Inspector General of Police, State Security Service boss over detention

The Deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, on Thursday filed a suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja challenging his banishment and seeking an order for his release from the post-dethronement detention and confinement.

Penpushing reports, lawyers of the former traditional ruler led by Lateef Fagbemi filed the suit with reference number FHC/ABJ/CS/357/2020 with prayer that, Sanusi should not be held in captivity, arguing that the banishment is unconstitutional.

The former Emir was sacked by the Kano State Government over allegation of insubordination, and thereafter moved to Awe community  in Nasarawa State and he has been held in an apartment in the town

Penpushing recalled that, Kano State Government explaining reasons behind the dethronement of the  Sanusi, on Monday attributing it to act of insubordination from the former monarch, a vocal advocate of reforms in Northern Nigeria..

The State Government in a statement made available to journalists by the Secretary to the Government Usman Alhaji, said the Executive Council unanimously approved Sanusi’s removal.

“The Emir of Kano is in total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the State Governor and other lawful authorities, including his persistent refusal to attend official meetings and programmes organised by the Government without any lawful justification which amount to insubordination,” ,the statement said.

“It is on record and in so many instances Mallam Muhammad Sanusi II has been found breaching part 3 section 13 (a-e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and which if left unchecked will destroy the good and established image of the Kano Emirate,”

The Governor in the statement, called for calm “while a new Emir of Kano Emirate will soon be appointed”, while as at the time of this report, and in a swift reaction, Sanusi and other members of the Kano emirate are challenging the law in court.

Penpushing also reports that, number of residents and other Nigerians see the Kano Government’s action as  the Governor’s way of getting at  Sanusi who is believed to have worked against the Governor’s re-election last year.
