Police arrest, handcuff wife beater lawyer

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested and handcuffed a lawyer, Ekere Ebong, who allegedly beat up his wife, inflicting injuries on the woman and stripped her half nude during a matrimonial feud in Uyo town of the state.

Penpushing reports that the legal practitioner was captured in a viral video assaulting the woman, who was seen with her underwear and had a bloodied face, as well as crying profusely, as neighbours later came to her rescue

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, in a statement on Monday confirmed that the 55-year-old lawyer was arrested at his Ewet Housing Estate residence, Uyo, over the incident.

‘The suspect assaulted his wife, and dehumanized her, leading to various grievous injuries. He is a known habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his wife over the years. As an agency saddled with the protection of lives and property and maintenance of law and order, we cannot allow Ebong to continue this flagrant abuse of human rights, hence, the Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi ordered the arrest of the suspect to prevent murder and breakdown of law and order’, Macdon said

Penpushing further reports that the police spokesperson who is a superintendent of police in the statement assured that the lawyer would be arraigned as soon as the investigation is conclude, and also in reaction to the ugly incident the national leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has directed the Uyo branch of the association to investigate the incident and cause the lawyer to appear before a disciplinary committee of the association,

The source from Uyo branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), pointed out that, that was not the first time Ebong would violently maltreat his wife publicly, stressing that his action was too bad to comprehend

Penpushing also reports that the Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno in his reaction declared that the state government would assist the woman to get justice in the matter, as he condemned the lawyer’s action

“The Government and people of Akwa Ibom State condemn this grave act of gender-based violence in the strongest possible terms. Government will assist the lady who was so dehumanised by a man who otherwise should be the one to protect her and ensure that justice is served in line with the provisions of the law against Gender-Based Violence’, Eno stated

Penpushing reports that the Governor in a statement by his spokesperson Ekerete Udoh expressed happiness that the lawyer had been arrested and that he would soon be charged, emphasisng that his administration has zero tolerance for gender-based violence.
