76-year old renowned Nigerian scholar, Dipo Fasina missing enroute Algeria

The former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dipo Fasina, popularly known as ‘Jingo,’ has been reported missing since Saturday, 1 July, 2023, having been said to be travelling to Algeria at the invitation of the Algerian government.

Penpushing reports that the incumbent President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed this adding that Fasina was said to have missed his connecting flight from Istanbul.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, also confirmed the missing 76 years old renowned Nigerian scholar, adding that the commission is aware and working on it.

Penpushing further reports that  Fasina an activist, and unionist, taught Philosophy for 34 years at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, which he joined in 1979 after returning from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he bagged his PhD.

The reported missing Fasina was born to the Ashogbon royal family of Lagos, who is nicknamed Jingo by his students is a trustee of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and chairperson of the Joint Action Front (JAF), a coalition of labour movements and civil society organisations championing pro-people policies in Nigeria.

Penpushing also reports that he is credited with having founded the philosophy department at the Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), and since his retirement from Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU), Ile-Ife has taught Philosophy across some Nigerian universities.

The members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU),Joint Action Front(JAF), friends and associates, as at the time of filing this report are said to be working round the clock towards his safe return.

Penpushing reports that Prof Osodeke who is the President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in the same vein said the union is working hard to locate the whereabout of the missing scholar and activist.
