2023 Governorship race: I have financial muscle to run lavish campaign, says Segun Showunmi

The factional Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has declared that he has enough financial muscle and other resources to prosecute his governorship ambition in the 2023 general elections.

Penpushing reports that, Showunmi made the declaration while addressing a press conference in Abeokuta, expressing optimism that he would come out victorious from the suit he instituted against Hon Ladi Adebutu, who is equally laying claim to the party ticket.

The politician was reacting to insinuation that, he was been sponsored by  faceless sponsors towards the election, emphasisng that he has good ground to prosecute the case, against his opponent, on who should be the authentic flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party9PDP) ahead of the poll

Penpushing further reports that, Showunmi said it took him twenty years to prepare himself for the governorship race, having paid his dues, in serving at various capacity of the party, stressing that it was an insult to insinuate that some certain interest are sponsoring him to scuttle the chances of the Peoples Democratic Party9PDP) in the state.

The factional candidate insisted  that the primary  conducted by the Adebutu camp could not stand and that the one that produced him (Showunmi) as candidate, which  followed all the rules, explaining that, it was irritating for anybody to claim that  he lacked the capacity to run a good campaign, whether in terms of resources or not.

‘I have ability within me, and my family, close associates to fund this campaign embarrassingly lavishly. I am not ready for fund raising for the campaign. It took me twenty years to build myself to run for the race’, he emphasized

Penpushing also reports that, Showunmi who was the spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign in 2019, and served under the administration of former Governor Gbenga Daniel said his ambition was built on improving the socioeconomic condition of the state.

“I feel irritated when people say this. Why do you think somebody has to pay me? Nobody has enough resources to buy me off. Friends, family and associates are passionate about Ogun State and about my ambition. Between us, we will fund this campaign adequately,” he insisted.

The candidate who described his ambition as the new deal for Ogun  state people  insisted that he remained the only experienced and qualified candidate to administer the affairs of the state at this time, assuring that he would run intelligent campaign.

“I’m not building my castles in the air; I’m not playing, they know it, I know it. We are going to run a very intelligent campaign, a campaign that is issue-based, a campaign that puts the candidate before you to answer questions on why, on how and on when’, Showunmi boasted

“I’m running on a New Deal – Sincerely Set principle. I have looked at the governance space in Nigeria and in Ogun State, in particular, and I’m convinced that we cannot keep doing things the way we have been doing them and expect an outcome that is different from the ones that we have been having’, he added.

“I don’t accept, for instance, that Ogun can afford to have a very high number of out of school children who are no longer interested in education. I don’t accept that, giving our pedigree, in peer review exams like NECO, WAEC and others, we will be so low compared to other states. I do not accept that whatever it is that we call out health intervention really gives no comfort to the citizens,” Showunmi said.
