Nigeria’s Super Falcons ruthlessly defeat Zambian team 5-0 to secure ticket for 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals
The Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Friday ruthlessly defeated Zambia female team with 5-0 in Casablanca to secure their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Penpushing reports that the nine-time champions came out firing at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, scoring three goals before halftime, and subsequently recorded two other goals in the second half of the encounter
The Super Falcons defender Osinachi Ohale set the tone as early as the 3rd minute, nodding home from a set-piece to open the scoring, which was her second Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) goal against the Copper Queens, having also scored in 2014.
Penpushing further reports that Esther Okoronkwo, doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 33rd minute of the match, dominated by the Super Falcons, finishing off a sweeping move to grab her first goal of the tournament.
The Nigeria’s female team striker Chinwendu Ihezuo just before halftime, striker pounced on a defensive lapse to make it 3-0, which was her third goal in four games, and in the 68th minute, defender Tosin Demehin rose highest to head in a fourth, before substitute Folashade Ijamilusi completed the rout with a well-taken finish in the 76th minute.
Penpushing also reports that with the win, Nigeria’s Super Falcons remain the only team yet to concede a goal at the ongoing tournament—underlining their defensive discipline and title credentials.
The Super Falcons will now face the winner of the Ghana versus South Africa quarterfinal in what promises to be a heavyweight semifinal clash, and as Nigeria continue their pursuit of a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, this performance has given more people the hope that Mission X is indeed possible.
