Women with disability empower members in Ogun State

The Women with Disability in Ogun State, and affiliate of People Living with Disability on Friday empowered number of its members with working tools to improve their wellbeing and to make ends meet in their day to day activities.

Penpushing reports that, the event took place at the hall of Ogun State Women Development Centre located along Presidential boulevard, a stone throw to the quarters of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abeokuta.

The working tools given out include: sewing machine, fridges and grinding machines among others which were handed over to the beneficiaries at the event well attended by members across the state

Penpushing further reports that, Chairperson of the group, Mrs Toyin Laoshe-Adekunle in her welcome speech recalled that,the programme started  in 2014, with the aim to make sure  that all women with disability are dependent.

‘We don’t want them begging before they could  take care of themselves, we started this programme in 2014 and the aim of the programme is to  make sure  that all women with disability are dependent’, Laoshe-Adekunle said

Penpushing also reports that, the chairperson thanked God for the opportunity to make the project a reality and protecting them from the coronavirus pandemic, adding that, ’I want to use this opportunity to thank everyone for their contributions’

The Director of Women Empowerment from Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Wonuola Kassim delivered lecture titled, ’Surviving the Impact of Covid-19 by Physically Challenged Persons’ at the event

Penpushing reports that, the Director represented by Miss Jumoke Sokunbi  in the lecture said to achieve the highest attainable  standard of health for persons with disabilities, there number of actions to be taken.

The lecturer explained that number of such actions to be considered  include: strengthen the state legislation and policies on health care in line with the convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, identify and eliminate obstacles  and barriers to accessibility in health care facilities.

Penpushing further reports that, Kassim said other are; improve health care coverage and affordability for persons with disabilities as part of universal approaches to health care, train health care personnel on disability inclusion and improve service delivery for persons with disabilities.

The lecturer said this also include; empower persons with disabilities to take control over their own health care decisions, on the basis of informed consent, prohibit discriminatory practices in health insurance and promote health insurance coverage for assistive products and rehabilitation services and improve research and data to monitor, evaluate and strengthen health systems to include and deliver persons with disabilities
