The Secretary General of United Nations (UN),Antonio Guterrus has been re-elected unanimously by the assembly of 193-member organisation for second five year term.
Penpushing reports that the Assembly President Volkan Bozkir made the announcement of the re-election by “acclamation,” without a vote, hence the assembly chamber burst into applause
The current Security Council President, Sven Jurgenson, who is Estonia’s United Nations (UN). Ambassador, before the announcement read a resolution adopted by the 15-member council recommending Guterres for a second term.
Penpushing further reports that, Guterres was the only candidate nominated by a United Nations(U.N) member state, his home country Portugal where he previously served as Prime Minister, and the country’s current President was in the assembly chamber to watch the event
The re-elected Scribe of the world body, immediately after his re-election took the oath of office and delivered an address urging United Nations(UN). member nations “to do everything possible to overcome current geostrategic divides and dysfunctional power relations.”
Penpushing reports that, it is recalled that Guterres had in October 2016 contested alongside 13 candidates which include seven women and six men and won, and thereafter took over from Ban Ki-moon
