TELEVISION PLAYS VITAL ROLE IN DEMOCRACY SUSTENANCE IN NIGERIA DEMOCRACY,SAYS ALAO-AKALA
The politician who spoke on the topic “Roles of Television In Deepening Democracy”, also noted that the mass media has contributed tremendously to the nation democracy, adding that television is a powerful medium of communication which tells the masses how thing is going around, and for them to see and know the latest in town.
“Television have arresting nature because it has been consistent seduce of our time, it has turned the world to a global village where everybody can see how things are going on, television promote aggressive and controversial programs that will make the government to seek redress’.
He added that if properly used, television is a powerful tool to uplift good governance and democracy, noting that free and independent press will enhance democracy, just as he urged the media to always put the interest of the nation first while discharging their duties, noting that this will will assist the nation to fulfill its goal.
” Journalists should avoid destructive and bias reportage, and focus on things that will be of benefit to the citizens of this nation, achieving national development requires true dissemination of information to the public, journalists need more training on conflict reporting and they should do more in the area of investigative journalism so as to expose some social evils and put the nation working again because Nigeria can still make it with their help because
democracy is the best form of government.
The chairman of Nigerian Union of Journalists,(NUJ) Oyo State Council, Adewunmi Faniran while speaking at the event said that government should give adequate and proper attention to media particularly the television stations, noting that this will help them to perform better.
His words, “We shall continue to appeal to our people particularly the government to created a good working environment for media practitioners, and give necessary support to the them’, noting that media practitioner should be adequately taking care of and this will assist them to do their job appropriately.
“Politician should not take television stations and other media houses as use and dump for their political ambition; instead, media should be supported and encouraged for them to perform excellently’.
