Suspected herders attack Ebonyi community, many residents die
Suspected armed herders on Sunday attacked the Amegu Nkalagha community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, killing many residents and burning down houses, an incident believed to be a reprisal following the killing of some cattle belonging to the herders in the area.
Penpushing reports that a community member identified as Prof Ndubuisi Idenyi, confirmed the attack but said he could not ascertain number of casualties as at the time of filing this report, but another source said a Pentecostal pastor in the area was among those killed in the attack
The Professor who was a former chairman of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), Ebonyi State University Chapter, added that the community members were still tracking and bringing out the dead bodies, especially those killed in the farms.
Penpushing further reports that the source who pleaded anonymity, stated that the community members were not responsible for the killing of the cattle, stressing that they won’t kill their(herders) cows, but the cows were killed by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB’s) Eastern Security Network in the forest.
The chairman of shielu Council, Ifeoma Agwu while confirming the incident, said he could not talk very well as at the time of contact, explaining that the bodies were been transported to the mortuary, while the Ebonyi State Police Command Public Relations Officer Joshua Ukandu was yet to make any official statement on the ugly development.
