Sexagenarian seeks divorce over wife’s regular beatings

A sexagenarian, John Anya, has appealed to  an Igando Customary Court in Lagos State to dissolved his 33 year old marriage with his wife, Egobeke, who he accused of fond of beating him.

Penpushing reports that, the haulage contractor, resident of number 7, Unity Avenue, Akesan, told the court that, he had to run away from home, and put up in church when the beating from his wife was no more bearable.

“My wife is such a nuisance. She shows her character when I don’t have money to drop for the home front. She beats me,” said the man who is said to be in his sixties. I have had to run away from home and put up in my church to save my life’, Anya told the court..

‘She has tried to chock me to death before. Look at her height and weight. Now, imagine her pinning me down and trying to sniff life out of me. She lacks managerial sense. She talks bad about me to my children and has turned their minds against me. I am fed up of the whole situation and I want the court to grant me a divorce,” he begged.

Penpushing further reports that, the embattled wife, a businesswoman in tears passionately appealed to the court, not to grant the divorce prayer of his husband, and told the court that allegations against her was untrue

“Which virtuous woman has divorce attached to her portfolio. I do not want a divorce, before we got married I had been told I would have a rough marriage and I have settled it in my mind and I am carrying my cross diligently’

Penpushing also reports that, the woman added that, she had endure enough in the marriage, and could not understand why her husband want a divorce, having himself(husband) done to many unimaginable to her.

“I have endured enough in this marriage sir. I do not know why my husband is telling all these lies against me. This whole issue came up because of the three women he is dating now. One of them is my very good friend’, she told the court.

‘He doesn’t know that I am aware of his atrocities, he patronises commercial sex workers. He says I beat him? Please can you see any scar on him? But look at my body you will see scars from his beatings,’ she added

Penpushing reports that, the woman further told the court that her husband  gives her only N1,000 as feeding allowance daily for a family of five, adding that she had never beaten him, as claimed in his petition.

Meanwhile, the President of the court, Koledoye Adeniyi,  in his ruling, adjourned the case until March 31 for further hearing.
