Race for chairmanship candidate for All Progressives Congress council election tears party apart
The politicking rocking Abeokuta South Local Government on who becomes the chairmanship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), on Sunday took another dramatic turn as a faction emerged to declare support for Omolaja Majekodunmi.
Penpushing reports that this coming barely 48 hours after some aspirants resolved to step down for the incumbent caretaker chairman of the local government, Ayodeji Somide who recently declared interest to run the race to be elected as the council boss
The faction against Somide under the banner of Independent Campaign Group (ICG), APC Youth League (APCYL), All Progressives Youth Forum (APYF), Dapo Abiodun Youth Movement (DAYM) and Afo Liberation Forum (ALF) held a press conference declaring that their choice candidate is Majekodunmi
Penpushing further reports that, the groups led by Muhammed Alli said the decision of the leaders of the party was making Majekodunmi the consensus candidate to represent the party at the forthcoming poll.
The faction declared that the groups could not have a better candidate like Majekodunmi and his running mate, Sotayo Iretiolu, describing them as loyal and upright party members, stating that they cannot vouch for any aspirant(s) whose source of income is questionable.
“We respect our leaders, we hold our Elders in high esteem, so, their decisions should be supreme on all the party members except whoever would like to tow the line of the Paki people as we had in the 2019 General Elections’.
“We don’t want to experience another unpleasant image in which Mr Abidemi Rufai has projected the state before the International community which subjected the state to ridicule in the committee of States in the country’.
“Hon. Majekodunmi and Surv. Sotayo are loyal party men, upright in their dealings, immaculate hearts, humble and season administrators. They are professionals with traceable sources of income. Therefore, the development of Abeokuta South Local Government in line with the vision and mission of Governor Dapo Abiodun, MFR won’t be a herculean task for them.”
“Abeokuta South is the foremost Local Government in Egbaland and Nigeria, we cannot afford its name to be pulled through the mire by supporting a chairmanship candidate whom we cannot validate his source of income or the one that won’t be confidential with the party and government secrets all in an attempt to make money’
Penpushing also reports that, it is recalled that, eight out of the twelve accredited aspirants stepped down from the party primaries in favour of Somide and were said to have met and resolved to team up with him, who is said to be interested to contest for the seat, for him to become an elected chairman.
The investigation conducted revealed that, those who stepped down were said to have done that, to support the aspiration of Somide, who they claimed had performed creditably well as the caretaker chairman of the council.
