Police brutality: Widow begs panel to financially assist her to take care of her daughter
A widow petitioner against police brutality on Monday called on Ogun State Judicial panel of investigation to assist her financially to enable her take care of daughter left behind by her husband alleged to have been murdered by the disbanded special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)
Penpushing reports that, the petitioner, Fatimah Elegbede made the appeal during the sitting of the panel at Magistrate Court, Isabo, Abeokuta, expressing optimism that with the caliber of panel membership she would get justice, calling for through investigation into her petition
The woman emphasised in her petition that the disbanded special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS),killed her husband unlawfully, adding that since demise of the family breadwinner, she and her bereaved daughter have been living from hands to mouth
The Chairman of panel Justice Solomon Olugbemi speaking with journalists revealed that the panel has received a total of 105 petitions on police brutality and human rights abuses, saying the panel has put an end to submission following expiration of the date for submission, adding within the last six weeks it started sitting, the panel has treated 19 out of the 105 petitions submitted.
“Our initial deadline was 18th November, 2020 before it was extended to the end of November to give room for more petitions”,Olugbemi said, adding that the panel will do all in its power to ensure that nobody is witch hunted, and assured that justice would be delivered based on evidences provided and adequate evaluation.
Penpushing further reports that, the counsel to the widow, Femi Aina, expressed optimism that justice is near with the calibre of the Panel members and the kind of questions they were asking during cross examination.
