OYO STUDENTS PROTEST IN IBADAN
Speaking with journalists during the protest, Olujuwon pointed out that the peaceful protest was to commemorate democracy day and also to make their demands known to the general public and the government, together with management of tertiary institutions in Oyo State.
‘The association deems it fit to impress upon the public that our democracy is incomplete without a good education system’, the students leader said.
Penpushing further reports that,he highlighted some of the demand of the students which include: adequate funding of education, reinstatement of all proscribed Students Union, reinstatement of all victimised student leaders across Oyo State, accreditation of courses in some of higher institutions in the State to enable the mobilization of students for National Youth Service, and reduction in hike school fees in institutions across the State which has made education unaffordable, among others.
“In light of the foregoing, the association resolved to stage a symbolic walk to bring the problems being faced by students in Oyo State to the attention of the government and the general public, these problems have persisted for years and need to be addressed immediately, quick, and responsive intervention of the new government.”
Penpushing also reports that, Asubiojo noted that education is the most important issue to be addressed in Nigeria and the association believes that Oyo State is pivotal to the sustenance of good culture in Nigeria.
“I wish to remind the citizens of the country the importance of the joint June 12 celebrations, people died to achieve this democracy which is the largest in Africa and we must always remember. It is generally agreed that democracy is government by the people and for the people. If there is any democratically elected government anywhere in the world the welfare of the people ought to be the shibboleth of its policies.”
