United Nations commemorates world day to combat desertification, drought

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC); Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Maritime Organisation (WMO) have concluded arrangements to commemorate the 2022 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

Penpushing reports that, the ceremony is scheduled to hold on Friday, 17 June 2022 through online  Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEsce6sqz8tH9wD0rgk4aZqAj8L7PB5LWBl  will starts from 9.30am

The theme of this year event is  “Rising up from drought together”, which is designed to  emphasise the need of an early action to avoid disastrous consequences for humanity and the planetary ecosystems, and expected in attendance is Matthias Schmale ,United Nations(UN) Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria

Penpushing further reports that, other notable participants are  Country Representative, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Mr Fred Kafeero, Country Representative, World Maritime Organisation (WMO), Mr Bernard Gomez, Director United Nationa Information Centre(UNIC), Mr Ronald Kayanja , Dr Eugene Itua, Representative of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW)

The organisers called on participants, which include journalists to register through the provided link, explaining that after registration, they are expected to receivea confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting

Penpushing also reports that, the United Nations General Assembly by its resolution A/RES/49/115 of 1994, declared 17 June “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought” to promote public awareness of efforts to combat desertification, and to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels.
