Nigerian Football Supporters Club is a source of inspiration, says Obasanjo
The Nigerian former President Olusegun Obasanjo has affirmed that the Nigerian Football Supporters Club is a source of inspiration to the country’s national teams over years and therefore, urged all well meaning Nigerians to encourage and assist the club
Penpushing reports that he made the affirmation when the club paid him a courtesy visit at his private residence located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital
The former President recalled vividly the inspiring and motivating songs of the club which culminated in Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over Brazil at the semi-final match of the football event of the Atlanta Olympic games in 1996, reiterating that he is one of the ardent admirers of the club.
Penpushing further reports that Obasanjo who joined millions of other Nigerians to congratulate the Super Falcons and D-Tigress on the successes the two teams achieved lately, added that the game of football is a major unifying force in Nigeria and could no longer be ignored.
The Balogun of Owu Kingdom praised the two teams for inscribing the name of Nigeria in gold in the annals of African Sports, however counseled the girls not to allow the bountiful rewards and National honours bestowed on them by the presidency distract them from further successes.
Penpushing also reports that the President General of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Dr Rafiu Ladipo earlier in his speech thanked Obasanjo for welcoming the club to his home and for the numerous assistance he had given to the club in the past.
The football supporters club boss recalled the unquantified assistant rendered to the club in 2006 when Obasanjo provided an aircraft to bring the stranded 175 member of the club back to Nigeria from Cairo Egypt when the airline that was to transport them back to Nigeria reneged in its contractual obligation.
Penpushing reports that Ladipo added that the club came to Abeokuta to notify Obasanjo, the Club’s Grand Patron at the 70th anniversary of the club scheduled to hold on November 28, 2025 and to seek his endorsement and blessings.
Meanwhile, the former President promised to do all within his powers to support the 70th anniversary celebrations.
