Broadcasting Organisation makes case for establishment of Society of Nigerian Broadcasters
The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria(BON) has called for the establishment Society of Nigeria Broadcasters, hence, the need to immediately set up a committee to work on modalities for its take off
Penpushing reports that, the call was contained in a communiqué issued by the Central Working Committee (CWC) at the end of its meeting held at the secretariat of the organization in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory(FCT)
The communique jointly signed by the chairman Sa’a Ibrahim and Dr Yemisi Bamgbose (Executive Secretary), said the Central Working Committee (CWC) also called for a complete review of the digitization process specifically in the area of legal framework.
Penpushing further reports that the body noted that, this became necessary as the only document available remains the Government White paper of 2012 which does not capture contemporary technological development and its deficient in addressing decade long issues that have emerged since its issuance.
The meeting which reviewed holistically the process of Digitization, the formation of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Audience measurement, National Broadcasting Commission(NBC) licence rates and other Industry matters equally called for the immediate stoppage of the collection of Digital Access Fee while the amount so far collected should be accounted for.
Penpushing also reports that, the meeting proposed the following as broadcast license fees pending the final migration from analogue to digital per annum: National DTT N20 million, Regional N10 million, Abuja/Lagos/Kano and Port Harcourt N15 million and State DTT N500,000
The Central Working Committee (CWC) called on Nigerian government to ban Importation of analogue Television sets into the country while the cost of Set-top boxes should be made affordable, adding that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) should bring together as a matter of urgency all critical stakeholders in broadcast industry to take a total review of the entire DSO process.
Penpushing reports that, the meeting noted the reported directives given to broadcast stations on the issue of insurgence and banditry reportage, and while appreciating the concerns of National Broadcasting Commission(NBC) as regulator, believes there should be more interface with practitioners than issuing directives that are interpreted as moves to gag the industry.
