Kebbi state government declares Monday public holiday

The Kebbi State Government has declared Monday as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the new Islamic calendar, 1st Muharram 1446AH, as it urged Muslims to sustain fervent prayers for the peace, security, and prosperity of the state and the nation as a whole.

Penpushing reports that Kebbi State Commissioner for Establishment, Auwal Manu-Dogondaji made this known in a statement on Friday, explaining that, the 1st of Muharram is on a Sunday, but due to the importance of the Islamic New Year, the government decided to shift the public holiday to Monday.

The Commissioner in the statement added that the Governor, Nasir Idris congratulated the Muslim Ummah on the advent of the new Islamic calendar and called for fervent prayers for the state and the country as a whole.

Penpushing further reports that the month of Muharram is the first month on the Islamic calendar, it has 29 days, beginning on July 7, 2024 and ending on August 4, 2024, and in Nigeria and Arabic world is on 6 July, 2024.

The 1st of Muharram is expected to be on 07 July, 2024, in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and some other parts of the world, while the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds special significance, as the incident of Karbala also took place in the same month.
