Reminiscence: Abeokuta Grammar School started academic operations in a warehouse

The famous Abeokuta Grammar School started its academic activities in a warehouse located in Ijemo-Agbadu area of Abeokuta, before it became a housename and institution of excellence, having produced number of successful products in various field of operations across the globe.

Penpushing reports that, this was made known on Tuesday by the President General of the old students association of the school, Hon Lanre Laoshe at a press conference in preparatory for the 113th Founders’ Day Anniversary

The President General going memory lane said the warehouse was owned by late Macaulay, with the hostel sited at the home of Barrister Ajisafe Moore, a stone throw to the college location, adding that late Rev Israel  Ransome-Kuti (father of late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti) as the first student, who later also became Principal of the school.

Penpushing further reports that, Laoshe ,said  the school  was established in July 1908 when Egba Christians sought the missionaries assistance, and following the support and consent of the missionaries, both the Christians, the community and Egba united government named it Abeokuta Grammar School.

The old students leader disclosed that, as the school activities progresses , the Egba United Government commenced the construction of the Igbein  campus which was completed in December,1912, adding that through driving force of the old students, 75 hectares of land was acquired at Idi-Aba area of the ancient town for the expansion and progress of the school.

Penpushing also reports that, Laoshe explained that, the relocation of the school to Idi-Aba, a more spacious land followed the glaring fact that the Igbein campus had became congested, adding that as at today the school has 7,000 population

The President General boasted that, the old students association known as AGSOBA has contributed immensely to the development of education in Ogun State and Nigeria, stressing that the body is committed to further development of  the school in the coming years

‘We are committed to further development of our school in the coming years and have set greater goals for the next century, some of which will unfold in the near future, emphasing that the association has transformed from a national to a global organisation’, he stated.

Penpushing reports that Laoshe  disclosing highlights  of a weeklong founders day ceremony which kick start on Wednesday said  these include: education summit, football match, cultural performance, Jumat service, variety night, annual general meeting, awards, dinner and to be rounded off with a thanksgiving service in the church
