Journalists threatened over coverage of Ogun state community land dispute case
A man, suspected to be a member of a group involved in a land dispute between a Chinese company, Zhi Yuan Global Nigeria Limited, and some indigenes of Owu Adepiti community in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun, attacked journalists covering court proceedings at Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta.
Penpushing reports that the incident occurred on Thursday after a court session (suit number AB/235/2025) where journalists were taking shots and speaking with counsels outside the courtroom.
The man, part of the defendants’ group, disrupted the recording, threatening to destroy cameras and warning journalists to stop covering the case, threatening that he would deal with them if they continue taking shots
“Who ordered you to take the shot? Will you stop that, or I’ll destroy your camera. What effrontery do you have to come to the court to cover the proceedings? You should stop that before you get on my nerves’, he said
Penpushing further reports that journalists ignored his threats, citing their constitutional duties, and continued reporting, and in the process, the defendants’ lawyer intervened, cautioning the man against disrupting journalists’ work, after which he left the scene.
The civil matter regulated by the (Civil Procedure) Rules 2024 of the High Court of Ogun State case involves Rev Reuben Adisa Adekunle, with seven others and Zhi Yuan Global Nigeria Limited and nine others.
