Japan’s longest serving minister shot dead at political function
The Japan’s longest-serving Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe has been shot dead on Friday while delivering a speech at Kintetsu Railway’s Yamato-Saidaiji Station, in the western city of Nara of the country, ahead of a parliamentary election
Penpushing reports that gunmen opened fire at him twice from behind, and immediately collapsed, with no sign of life after the shot, as he was bleeding profusely, before he was rushed to the Nara Medical University Hospital in Kashihara City
The 67 year old former Prime Minister was, however confirmed dead by the hospital authorities, explaining that he was in cardio-pulmonary arrest before being taken to the hospital.
Penpushing further reports that, a 41 year old former member of the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF), Tetsuya Yamagami, was arrested by the police on suspicion of attempted murder and retrieved what appeared to be a handmade gun from the vicinity where Abe was shot
The late former Prime Minister served from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020, later stepped down in September 2020 due to a relapse of chronic intestinal disease, while the incident was said to have happened as Abe, the former leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was in Nara to support a Liberal Democratic Party(LDP) candidate running in the House of Councilors election on Sunday.
