International Women Day Celebration: Non-Governmental organization organizes training for female students
A Non-Governmental Organisation, Gender Development Initiative (GenDi) in collaboration with Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) on Wednesday organized a training workshop for students of St Peters College, Abeokuta to mark activities for the International Women Day Celebration.
Penpushing reports that the training tagged, ‘Story Telling of Survivors in the Digital Space’ which was supported by the Ford Foundation took place within the college premises located at Olomore area of Abeokuta, and had in attendance 50 female students as participants.
The guest lecturer and volunteer Temitope Alfred took the female students through story telling in the digital space, with instructions and interactive session on story telling using drawings to express stories of survivors of gender based violence
Penpushing further reports that at the celebration which was also attended by teachers, the lecture also looked at how girls can use digital skills positively to promote learnings and what should not be shared within the digital space, with a volunteer, Omolade Zubair engaged the students on presentation of survivors stories
The Programme Officer of Gender Development Initiative (GenDi), Ifeoluwa Omorake in her welcome speech explained that the International Women Day is a period meant to reconnect, recollect and mark women’s history around the globe
‘International Women’s Day is on the 8th of March of each year. It is a time when we reconnect, recollect and mark women’s history around the globe. In this year’s edition, we are making a call to achieve a gender-equal world, where every woman, irrespective of her colour, tribe or race will be free from prejudice and discrimination. We are working towards an inclusive’, she said
Penpushing also reports Omoraka stated that the theme of the celebration is ‘Digital: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality towards Attaining the Goal of Sustainable Development’, and however, preached need for all to embrace equity
The Programme Officer gave profile of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre(WARDC) as a women’s rights organization in Nigeria founded by Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, and that the organization provides pro bono legal services for women victims of gender-based violence and other women’s right abuse
Penpushing reports that on the Gender Development Initiative (GenDi), Omoraka said it’s a Non-Governmental Organisation that focuses on empowering children, youth and women, uplifting their socio-economic potential.
The profile added that the organization has been undertaking pioneering work to transform gender norms and bring about gender equality to enhance sexual and reproductive health outcomes of children, youth and women
