Inside Aso rock: Osoba, others task Buhari on devolution of power
The Yoruba leaders in the South-West of Nigeria held closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari penultimate Friday, and source revealed that, the agenda of the meeting include need for the devolution of powers from the centre to the federating units
Penpushing reports that, the four-man team include; Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Governor of Ogun State,,Chief Bisi Akande, former interim National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC), Dr Yomi Finnih and Prince Tajudeen Olusi from Lagos State.
The Presidency and the four-man team, however kept mute on the outcome of the meeting, but findings showed that, the meeting among others emphasized importance of a true federal constitution said to be top of the agenda.
Penpushing further gathered that, the Yoruba elders posited that the President should encourage the relevance in process of addressing the defects in the present federal system of government, identified to have constituted backslide on progress and development of the country.
The source informed that, the team at the meeting held in Abuja, the country’s capital pointed out to the President that the existing federal structure was defective and stressed need to replace the 1999 constitution with a framework that will meet aspirations and yearnings of the citizens
Penpushing also reports that, Osoba and others emphasized need for the country to have a constitution that will return it to lost glory with powers devolved appropriately to the adjoining units in a coordinated arrangement.
The source added that, the Yoruba elders argued that under the new structure, no section will be deprived of their legitimate and constitutional powers, resources, functions, responsibilities and other statutory rights and privileges.
Penpushing reports that, the South-West leaders posited with these, would be in the overall interest of all stakeholders, with a coordinated arrangement, just as it is recalled that restructuring and power devolution have formed part of the major resolutions of delegates at the 2014 national conference.
The source also disclosed that the team raised the issue of police brutality protests which was hijacked by hoodlums leading into wanton of destruction of public property in Lagos State with the state government putting loss estimate to over N1 trillion.
