TRADE UNION CONGRESS CONDEMNS DELAY IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MINIMUM WAGE

This was made known in a release signed by the Union’s Southwest Coordinator, Comrade Olubunmi Fajobi, and its Secretary, Comrade Helen Odofin, during its quarterly meeting, held at Presken Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State, on  September 24 and 25 September respectively.

Penpushing further reports that the Union, also added that it will not hesitate to align with whatever declaration, and or directive in the workers’ quest for the implementation of the National Minimum Wage, adding that it will take with pinch of salt the Government’s proposal to move the country’s Civil/Public Service into penury with the unrealistic proposal of 11.5% and 6.5% increment for Grade Levels 7-14 and 15-17 respectively.

The body, also stated that the approved upward review of the wage, in the first instance, was not based on random decision on figures rather, the yardsticks employed directly touched on prevailing socio economic realities against the nation’s Gross Domestic Productivity, amongst other essentials of economics.

Penpushing also reports that the union has therefore made it known that it will stand on its decision when  the authorities through their representatives choose to work on the Consequential/Relative Adjustment Committee, as though public workers are inconsequential and so be treated.

The meeting  added that, it must be made abundantly clear that the patience of the Labour Movement over this issue has been over stretched, stressing that it is expedient therefore that the Federal Government removes its hard stance and act fast to forestall the impending national industrial action that may negatively impact the yet-to-fully recover economy.
