Alleged cultism: Police warn against solidarity protest against arrest of students’ union government President

The Ogun State Police Command has read a riot act against alleged proposed protest by students of some institutions following the arrest of Students Union Government President of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Adegboye Olatunji, over cultism.

Penpushing reports that, he Command Public Relations Oficer, Abimbola Oyeyemi in a statement on Sunday said, intelligence report at the police disposal indicated that the planned statewide solidarity protest is scheduled for Monday, and made it clear that anybody caught will face full wrath of the law.

‘An intelligence report at the disposal of Ogun State Police Command indicated that some misguided students are planning to stage a statewide protest in Ogun State in solidarity with the  suspended SUG President of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro who was recently arrested for cultism’.

‘The aim of the protest is to disrupt the semester examination of the institution scheduled to start on Monday 17th of February 2020 and  also to disturb the peace of the State in general. In view of this, the Ogun State Police Command wishes to advise parents and guardians to warn their children and wards not to involve themselves in any activity capable of disrupting the peace enjoying by the good people of Ogun state as the Command will view such act with all seriousness’.

Penpushing further reports that, Oyeyemi added, that as an organization saddled with the constitutional responsibility to protect life and property, the command will not fold its arms and watching some disgruntled elements making life difficult for law abiding citizens of the state.

‘Therefore, anybody or group that makes any attempt to throw the state into unnecessary chaos will be made to feel the full weight of the law. To this end, all the command’s tactical squads have been activated and deployed across the state to nip in the bud any act of violence capable of jeopardizing the peaceful atmosphere of the state’, the statement warned.

‘The commissioner of police  Kenneth Ebrimson has also deployed a detachment of anti-riot policemen around the polytechnic Ilaro to ensure that the law abiding students of the institution go about their academic activities without any form of harassment or intimidation. To be fore warned is to be fore armed.

Penpushing also recalled that, the police had announced the arrest of Olatunji for allegedly aiding cultism and supervising initiation of students as new members into secret cult group, adding that the students’ leader was arrested alongside another accomplice Olarewaju Taiwo on Sunday.

The Police spokesman  said the duo were arrested following an information received by Police at Ilaro Division from members of the public that some group of people suspected to be cultists were sighted in a bush at Gbogidi area of Ilaro where they were trying to initiate new members into their dreaded group.

Penpushing reports that, Oyeyemi said that, the two arrested cultists who are in full regalia of the dreaded black axe cult group, stating that, ‘on receiving the information, the DPO Ilaro Division, CSP Olayemi Jacob mobilized his patrol team and swiftly moved to the scene where the two suspects were arrested with the assistance of members of the public while others escaped through the bush’.
