Musa-Olomu commences process of final exit as Federal Medical Centre Medical Director after 8 years

The Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre (FMC), located in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta Capital of Ogun State, Prof Adewale Musa-Olomu on Thursday commenced process for his final exit from the institution after two terms of administration

Penpushing reports that Musa-Olomu who was in charge of the federal establishment kick-off his exit effective on May 31, 2025, from the health facility with a press conference held at the Telemedicine Hall of the hospital.

The outgoing Medical Director accompanied by management staff of the hospital will on Saturday, May 24, 2025 as part of activities to end his tenure will commission some projects, which will be perform by Minister of State for Health, Dr Kunle Salako and chair by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Penpushing further reports that Musa-Olomu while addressing journalists, however, advised the Nigerian government to increase the remuneration to Doctors in the country, as a way to address the japa syndrome by the medical practitioners.

The out-going hospital boss equally gave account of his stewardship for a period of eight years, while noting that for the country to harness the full potential of its home grown trained medical practitioners, the government must ensure putting in place adequate salary structure, in tandem with world best practices.

“The problem we had was that they have condemned medical services to nothing. Although, government are really taking the measures. They are increasing admission into medical schools, building pharmacies, laboratory technology, those things are increasing, not that they are reducing the numbers of Doctors, relocating to US, UK and Europe’, he said.

‘Let them also give us the incentives that we deserve. Give us the salaries that we deserve as the colonial masters were doing in those days when they treated us as number two immediately after the Director General then doctors will stay’, Musa-Olomu added.

“You can imagine in this hospital, my doctors separated cancer from the nerves, from the bones and the patient live again, what are they doing in US, what are they doing in UK’, he emphasised.

“It was here at FMC that cancer was removed. What is the salary of those Doctors, around N700,000 and N800,000. What are they going to do with that and you say they shouldn’t go to where they will be paid N10 million per month that they will be able to take care of their wives and children’, he stated.

‘Many of them have children abroad that they cannot afford to pay their bills. How will they be thinking of these social problems and say they want to take care somebody’s health. They have to take care of themselves’.

“Fine, they have invested a lot to the health sector, yes, they are training pharmacists doctors, but they should make sure that their incentives and salaries are paid so that we can stay back and do the necessary things”, he stressed

Penpushing also reports that, praised Nigerian government investment in the health sector, especially with the setting up of the Federal University of Medical Sciences in Abeokuta, however, lamented that the World Health Organization (WHO) research in a 2025, estimated that Nigeria has a Doctor-to-patient ratio of approximately 1:9,083,  arguig that that was a clear indication that there is a severe shortage of Doctors in the country.

The outgoing Medical Director pointed out that the World Health Organisation(WHO) recommended ratio of Doctor-to-patient is 1:600, and therefore, tasked the Nigerian government to rise up to the challenge of doing the needful.
