Fire incident: Electoral commission confirms safety of permanent voters cards, registration machines

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the fire incident which occurred at it’s Kauran Namoda local government office in Zamfara State does not affect valuable materials such Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and registration machines for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR)

Penpushing reports that National Commissioner and Chairman,

Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye made this known in a statement on Wednesday, adding that the said materials were saved for being stored in fireproof cabinets

“The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Zamfara State, Professor Sa’idu Babura Ahmed, has reported that our office in Kauran Namoda Local Government Area was gutted by fire. The tragic incident occurred around 11.00pm on Monday 2nd May 2022. No casualties were reported while critical materials such Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and registration machines for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise stored in fireproof cabinets were saved”,Okoye said.

Penpushing further reports that, the statement said the building was extensively damaged, adding that number of fixed and movable office furniture were destroyed in spite of the best effort of the Zamfara State Fire Service and the spirited efforts of good Samaritans to contain the inferno.

The Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee disclosed that a report on the incident had been made to the police, adding that the authorities have started investigation to ascertain the cause and advise the commission for further action.

“The attention of the Nigeria Police has been drawn to this incident. Together with the Fire Service, they have commenced investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire and advise the Commission for further action”, Okoye said
