EGBAS CLAMOUR FOR RESTRUCTURING, RETURNS TO PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT
Speaking further, Bakare who was accompanied by other executives of the group declared that, the Egba people are not satisfied with the current situation/arrangement in the country and categorically demanded a restructuring of the governance and political architecture of Nigeria for the benefit of all.
‘Having carefully considered the State of affairs in the country in the past, as well as the present we are using lessons learnt to articulate what Egba people want, where they want to be and what pace. We sincerely believe that the democratic and peaceful way to this is through restructuring’
Penpushing also reports that, the group added that, in its view the components of restructuring will consist of preliminary activities which are; credible census and referendum, stating that the four pillars include; return to parliamentary, return to six regions(states/zones),resource control and re-ordering of relationships among the component parts.
‘This country was nurtured by the British colonialist under the parliamentary system. In just six years this experiment was terminated by the military intervention. One effect of this was that there wasn’t enough time for the country to train a critical mass of politicians in the fine art of parliamentary democracy’, Bakare stated
The Chairman said, ’having experienced the presidential system for so long now, it is obvious that much rapid social and economic growth was achieved under the parliamentary system. We now see that the cost of running the presidential system is staggering’
‘The system feeds on lobbying and thrives on corruption, god-fatherism and mediocrity. For example, cabinet members are not elected representatives of the people in the presidential system. Consequently, it is much easier to marginalise a whole section of the country, as recently experienced by South Westerners in the membership of the cabinet’
