Cult clash: Four killed in Sagamu

A bloody cult clash between rival groups known as Aiye and Eiye on Monday claimed lives of four persons and number of others sustaining various degrees of injuries in Sagamu town of Sagamu local government area of Ogun State.

Penpushing reports that the cultists were seen at daylight engaging themselves with various dangerous weapons which include guns, cutlasses, charms, cudgel and stones among others in the streets of the ancient town as many residents running helter-skelter, with business activities hurriedly stopped

The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola confirmed the worrisome development in a statement adding that seven suspects were arrested as at the time of filing this report in connection with the deadly incident, explaining that the arrest was effected by police in collaboration with the officials of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria(VGN)

“On September 17th, 2023, the Ogun State Police Command in Sagamu conducted a successful raid led by ACP Shehu Alao in collaborations with the VGN (Vigilante Group of Nigeria). This operation was carried out in response to a report of a clash between two rival cult groups, namely Aiye and Eiye, resulting in the death of four individuals at Ewu Iya Sunday in Sakura”, Odutola wrote.

“Upon receiving the information, the Area Commander swiftly mobilized more personnel to the scene in order to prevent the clash from escalating and to apprehend the cultists involved. As a result, seven suspected cultists were arrested, and further investigations led to the recovery of a firearm, three live cartridges, and a criminal charm”, she added.

“The individuals apprehended were Asaiye Omolaja, Azeez Nofiu, Mathew Adewale, and Bolaji Ogunkemaya. It is worth noting that Bolaji Ogunkemaya was found with the four deceased persons in the same room where the killings occurred. One individual, Wasiu, managed to escape before the authorities arrived”, Odutola said

“During the raid, Bolaji Ogunkemaya provided critical information, stating that their leader, known as Azubuike aka BETTER, had been arrested by the Area Commander a fortnight ago. This information underscores the commitment of the police to dismantle these criminal networks”, the statement reads.

“To address the alarming rise in cult-related violence, the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamuti Abiodun Mustapha, personally visited Sagamu on the morning of September 18th to assess the situation firsthand and profile all the suspects apprehended”, Odutola stated

Penpushing further reports the command spokesperson said the Commissioner  sternly warned all cultists in Ogun State that their activities will no longer be tolerated,emphasizing the command has declared a zero-tolerance policy towards senseless killings and vows that none of these cultists will go unpunished.

The Command Public Relations said as at the time of filing this report, normalcy has been restored in the town and environs,with  the diligent efforts of law enforcement agencies, stressing that it is evident that the authorities are committed to maintaining peace and security in Ogun State.
