Cholera Outbreak: Ibadan community seeks government intervention

The residents of Arikuyeri and Lagun communities of Lagelu local government in Ibadan, Oyo State have called for government intervention, following confirmation of outbreak of cholera which has claimed some lives and many hospitalised
Penpushing reports that Baale of Arikuyeri, Chief Bashiru Kiladese while speaking with journalists on Tuesday noted that the incident actually happened last month as against media reports that said it happened on Monday
The community head noted that the case was reported to Lagelu local government and nothing was done to it except that the local government chairman came twice to sympathize with the community
“The local government chairman only came for inspection of the entire community and nothing was done since then, we were told that each house should go and dig toilets’, he said
Penpushing further reports that Kiladese explained that the communities are facing a lot of challenges as a result of government negligence, adding that there is absence of government infrastructural projects in the community
“The only source of water we have is well water, and the well we have is not even enough for the usage of the whole community, no single borehole was dug in the community, and it has been more than two years that we have had light in this community’
The community chief pointed out that the outbreak of the cholera affected five people adding that, only one person died, and however called on the government to come to the aide of the communities through provision of electric transformer, motorable road, and potable water (borehole) among others
Penpushing also reports that a resident at Lagun community, Chief Lafeef Akinbola, confirmed that some people were affected by the disease in Lagun, adding that about six people died while some survived
The chief said government had come to the community for inspection, adding that drugs have been supplied to the General hospital and residents were advised to keep their environment clean to avoid future occurrence
Penpushing further reports that the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bashiru Bello has earlier said that tests carried out on the affected persons are still premature, saying that samples collected have not confirmed the sickness to be cholera.
