Baby abandoned at Ilaro market now under care of ogun state government, says Commissioner

The Ogun State Government has confirmed custody of a two-day-old baby dumped in Sayedero Market in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of the state, who was earlier handed over to police by a woman.

Penpushing reports that Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye made the clarification at a press conference, contrary to the claim of a woman in a viral video that the baby was missing and called on well meaning members of the society to come to her aid.

The woman in the video said the baby was nowhere to be found  after the intervention of the officials of the government from the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development,

Penpushing further reports that Adeleye faulting the woman’s claim explained that the said is in good condition and was legally taken into protective custody by the Ministry after due documentation by the police, contrary to viral allegations.

The Commissioner Adeleye declared that the woman’s actions was an attempt to emotionally blackmail the government and mislead the public, just as she stated that government rejected alleged planned adoption by the woman who found the baby.

“We don’t normally allow those who know history of a baby to adopt him or her because of the future. We don’t give a child out of adopting in an environment where their stories are known” she explained.

Penpushing also reports that Adeleye emphasized that the baby as at now belongs to the government and Governor Dapo Abiodun who she described as the father of all rescued babies in the state.

“Any child found in Ogun State belongs to the state government. They are all children of the governor and that’s why whenever we are naming them, their surname is that of the governor of the day’, she explained.

“It’s not something that stated with Prince Dapo Abiodun, it’s something that has been there. You see some children they bear Daniel (referring to former Governor Gbenga Daniel); some of them, their surname is Amosun (referring to former Governor Ibikunle Amosun) and some of them, their surname is Abiodun, depending on when they’re found.”

Penpushing reports that she stated that while there are laid down rules and guidelines to adopting a child in the state, no orphanage or individual has the right to put a child up for adoption without approval from the ministry.

Meanwhile, the commissioner warned that anyone found doing so will be charged with abduction and made to face the wrath of the law.
