Babcock University final year student commit suicide after suspension for examination malpractice

The suspended 20-year-old undergraduate student of Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, Ogun State, Joshua Lawson, said to have been heartbroken by the suspension order has reportedly killed himself on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, at their family house in Lagos.

Penpushing reports that the 400-level Computer Science student suspended for a year by the management for examination malpractice is expected to graduate alongside his colleagues on July 27, 2025

The Director of Communication and Marketing of the university, Dr Joshua Suleiman, confirmed the sad incident, recalling that the deceased faced the university disciplinary committee for examination malpractice; and was found guilty which attracted a one-year academic suspension.

Penpushing further reports that Suleiman said Lawson has not even collected his suspension letter before he took his life, adding that it was suspected that he got wind of the suspension

“The school is aware of the tragic incident. He was a 400-level Computer Science student. He faced the university disciplinary committee for examination malpractice; he was found guilty and handed a one-year academic suspension’, he said.

“He has not even come for his suspension letter, maybe he got to know about the suspension. But we don’t know whatever happened thereafter, we only heard that the student took his life”, Suleiman stated

Penpushing also reports that he distanced the school from the incident, insisting that the death occurred off campus, stating that the university was unaware of the circumstances that led to Lawson’s decision.
