Academic Staff Union of Universities reelects Osodeke as president

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the largest union of academics in Nigeria, but known for its unending industrial dispute with the government has reelected its National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, for another three-year term of office.

Penpushing reports that, Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science, who succeeded Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, in 2020, is now set to run the union’s affairs of the union of lecturers of Nigeria’s universities until 2026, after the election held during the union’s National Delegates Conference at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), in Plateau State.

The national delegates conference also elected Mr Chris Piwuna, an Associate Professor at the University of Jos, as the Deputy National President, while Prof Ade Adejumo, of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State, was appointed as Financial Secretary; Prof Siji Sowande, of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB) as Treasurer, Prof Adamu Babayo was reelected Internal Auditor and Austen Sado as Investment Secretary.

Penpushing further reports that sources said Stella-Maris Okey, who was the Welfare Secretary during the immediate past administration was not reelected, butwas replaced by Aisha Bawa of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

The reelected President confirmed the development adding that the union would soon issue an official statement, while it is however, on record that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was founded in 1978.
