41 years after creation of union of local government employees, workers in Ogun state launch maiden celebration of annual week

The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE),Ogun state chapter is set to launch maiden edition of its union annual week celebration,  41 years after the establishment of the body with a call on the assembly to expedite action on recent debate to grant local government autonomy.

Penpushing reports that, the President of the union, Comrade Ayuba Olatunji made this known on Friday at a press conference held at the union headquarters located at Agbeloba area of Abeokuta, the state capital to kick start the week.

The union leader added that the body holds to the strong believe that the mutual co-existence of the country coupled with her peace and security will be guaranteed if the challenges of the local government are properly and timely addressed.

The President appealed to well meaning Nigerians, voluntary organizations, corporate bodies to be part of struggle for the emancipation of the local government in Nigeria, stressing the importance for state assemblies to assent the bill when transmitted to them without further delay.

Penpushing further reports that, Olatunji called on state governments, pending the granting of the autonomy for local government to respect and adhere strictly to the constitutional provisions on local government as earlier discussed, and the Supreme Court judgment on funding of primary education

‘By specifically  accepting her constitutional role of the highest funding of primary education, releasing the  Internally Generated Revenue of local government to respective local governments and remitting the 10% IGR to the joint account’, he emphasised

Penpushing also reports that, the union boss declared that state governors are oppressors of the local government, who hide under some constitutional lacuna in the 1999 constitution to undermine the smooth running of local governments

The President noted that these include: the unclear status of local government, funding and resource allocation as well as security of tenure of elected local government leadership, to the extent that local governments, generally are impoverished and unable to perform its constitutional responsibilities assigned to it
