Wike has constitutional right to support any candidate he wants, says all progressives congress

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has the right to support any candidate he wants, and has the constitutional freedom to campaign for any candidate in any political party, regardless of affiliation.

Penpushing reports that National Publicity Secretary of the ruling party, Felix Morka made this known during a television interview, while reacting to the controversy surrounding Wike’s support for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the February 21, 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

“If Nyesom Wike wants to go on campaigning for any candidate in any party whatsoever, he has the inherent liberty to do so. Wike is a citizen of the Federal Capital Republic of Nigeria who also has freedom guaranteed by the constitution. He has the right to support any candidate he wants,” Morka said.

Penpushing further reports that open backing of candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the council polls by Wike, a known controversial chieftain of opposition Peoples Democratic Party) has sparked debate about party loyalty, cross-carpeting and the boundaries of political allegiance in Nigeria’s multi-party democracy

The National Publicity Secretary of the ruling party in defence emphasized that Wike’s actions was an exercise of fundamental rights under the 1999 Constitution, rather than an All Progressives Congress (APC)-orchestrated strategy.

Penpushing also reports that President Bola Tinubu in same vein, on Sunday commended the Wike’s role in the All Progressives Congress (APC) victories in the Saturday elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the by-elections in Rivers State.
