United Nations tasks online publishers on panacea to stop fake news

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) on Thursday called on Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) to team up with the centre in fighting fake news and hate speech which is almost becoming norm across the globe.

Penpushing reports that, the National Information Officer of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Dr Seyi Soremekun made the call in his goodwill message at the 5th Annual Conference of Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) held at Sheraton Hotels, Lagos.

The veteran journalist pointed out that, the two bodies have areas of shared vision, that is to promote freedom of expression, and freedom of press, stressing that the online publishers should invest  in fact-checking websites.

‘I call on GOCOP to retool, revatalise and expand its membership base to accommodate other players in online publication. Fake news festers online; the fight to counter it must be online. GOCOP should invest in fact-checking websites. Fact-checking websites need to be increased to counter spread of fake news’, Soremekun  emphasised

‘The United Nations and Guild of Corporate Online Publishers have areas of shared vision that is to promote freedom of expression and freedom of the press. The 5 Ws and H in journalism still relevant. Our content should be based on fact and science’, he added
