United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres arrives Nigeria on 2-day official visit

The United Nations(UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres on Tuesday arrived Nigeria for a 2-day official visit, and was accompanied by Ms. Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA); Mr. Abdoulaye Mar Dieye, Special Coordinator for Development in the Sahel

Penpushing reports that, others in his entourage include Mr. Annadif Khatir Mahamat Saleh, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

The Secretary General and his team were received on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama; the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Mohammed Musa Bello; and the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, Prof Tijjani Muhammad-Bande; and other senior government officials.

Penpushing further reports that, earlier in the day, the Secretary-General visited Maiduguri where he was received by the Governor of Borno State, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum on solidarity with the victims of terrorism.

The United Nations (UN) scribe while addressing journalists explained that his visit to Borno State was symbolic in view of the international body’s priority to the world to fight terrorism and to create solutions for the victims of terrorism

“The fact that I came to Borno State is symbolic of our priority to the world to fight terrorism and to create solutions for the victims of terrorism. The Borno I found today is a Borno of hope. It’s a Borno with a future and I was very impressed to see the policy that is being applied here, recognizing that we don’t fight terrorism just by military means”, he said

Penpushing also reports the Governor in his remarks Zulum appealed to the Secretary-General to continue supporting the state in its reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement processes, as well as the reintegration of thousands of repentant Boko Haram terrorists back into the society.

The Governor in the same vein, requested support for the recharging of the Lake Chad Basin which provides means of livelihood to millions of people in the state.
