United Nations calls for end to killings, police brutality in Nigeria
The United Nations (UN) has called for an end to reported police brutality and abuses in Nigeria, and vehemently condemned the violent escalation on 20 October in Lagos which resulted in multiple deaths and caused many injuries.
Penpushing reports that, the Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made the call in a statement, adding that he has been following recent developments in Nigeria, and emphasized need to stop the wanton destruction properties and lives
The world body scribe in the statement made available by his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.
Penpushing further reports that, Guterres called on the Nigerian authorities to investigate these incidents and hold the perpetrators accountable, and urged the security forces to act at all times with maximum restraint while calling on protestors to demonstrate peacefully and to refrain from violence.
The Secretary-General encourages the authorities to swiftly explore avenues to de-escalate the situation, and reiterated the readiness of the United Nations(UN) to support national efforts towards finding a solution.
