United Nations admits positive role of Nigerian media in advancing women course
The United Nations (UN) Women on Wednesday admitted that media vibrancy has added value and progress to gender equality in Nigeria, stressing that media is key in setting the agenda and shaping direction on issues of national and global interest.
Penpushing reports that the United Nations (UN) Women representative in Nigeria, Beatrice Eyong made the affirmation at the opening ceremony of the convened media forum organized by the world body held at the conference hall of the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Country Representative in her speech appreciated media practitioners who have been prioritizing women’s issues since the last media conference held in 2023, noting that with their support there have been progress.
‘If there is anything we know, it is that media is key in setting the agenda and shaping direction on issues of national interest. Gender equality is making progress in Nigeria, with vibrancy of the media. Further, media is a tool that has been used over time in educating the society and accelerating behavioural change’, she stated
Penpushing further reports that Eyong pointed out that this is a fundamental prerequisite for advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, stressing need to change the mindsets of communities, where gender inequality is entrenched, noting that women’s voice is subdued and the rights and aspirations of young girls are violated with impunity
The United Nations (UN) Women boss expressed optimism that the conference will renew commitments to use media as tool to promote women’s political and economic empowerment and advocate for gender-responsive governance
‘’Representation of women in Nigeria’s parliament, where critical policies and laws are made, is just about 4% and about 17% painted as Ministers in the Federal Government. These are challenges that we must all join hand together to surmount’, Eyong emphasized
