Two dispatch riders killed as container falls off truck in Lagos
Two dispatch riders were on Sunday crushed to death after a 20-foot container fell on them during a collision involving two fully loaded Mack trucks on Eko Bridge inward Alaka, Lagos State.
Penpushing reports that the spokesperson of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the sad development in a statement posted on X handle, but the statement did not specify the time of the incident.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) attributed the crash to excessive speeding and suspected driver fatigue, explaining that the dispatch riders, identified by their vehicle registration numbers T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM, were navigating the bridge when the tragedy occurred.
“Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of one of the articulated trucks, reportedly speeding and allegedly dozing off, lost control of the vehicle. This collision led to the dislodgement of a 20-foot container from one of the trucks, which subsequently crushed two unsuspecting dispatch riders who were navigating the route at the time. Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene’, Taofiq said.
Penpushing further reports that the statement added that the agency officers monitoring traffic nearby responded swiftly, rescuing a severely injured truck driver who was transported to a hospital by a Lagos State Government ambulance.
The statement stated that two other truck drivers reportedly fled the scene and are currently being sought by authorities, adding that the crash site was promptly cordoned off, and traffic was redirected through Costain Roundabout to ensure safety and prevent further incidents.
Penpushing also reports that General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, reiterating the need for truck drivers to maintain full alertness while driving and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting out.
