Tinubu signs bill to revert to old national anthem

The Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has signed into law the bill to revert to the old national anthem, while it is recalled that the Senate on Tuesday passed the bill, and their counterparts at the lower chambers passed same on Thursday.

Penpushing reports that the Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this known while addressing lawmakers at the joint session of the National Assembly, explaining that the President passed the bill on Wednesday as part of the constitutional provisions to make it a law.

The Senate President in his address at the joint sitting urged Nigerians to familiarise themselves with the new national anthem, which was sung when the President arrived in the national assembly for the joint session.

Penpushing further reports that the bill seeks to replace the current anthem with the former one adopted as the country’s independence on October 1, 1960, but was changed in 1978 by the Olusegun Obasanjo military regime.

The President at the session, however, addressed the lawmakers for about seven minutes before, touching on the newly signed into law National Anthem Bill, and that was after initially declining to do so.

Penpushing also reports that Tinubu emphasized need not to risk the country’s democracy and called on every Nigerians to rise to the building of the democracy so that the future of the children will be productive and prosperous
